"today" with kathie lee gifford and hoda kotb. live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. hey, everybody, welcome, welcome, it's fun day monday, november 19th. we are delighted that you're here with us today. this is a very bittersweet day for me, hoda woman. bittersweet since it's the 10th anniversary since my daddy passed away. you know what it's like. hoda and i both lost our dads way too early, but we were so blessed to have fathers like we did. >> absolutely. >> he would have been smiling bigger than anybody on the planet last thursday night. >> every now and then in life you have a magical moment, and that night, the night that your show premiered, was incredibly magical. it was packed with all kinds of people, us, natalie, matt, al, regis, kris jenner, liza

manelli. there was a crazy red carpet. then frank and your kids, anyway, you walked inside and the place was buzzing. and once -- >> sorry. thank god for mary and laura. >> and the curtain went up and it was one of those things everybody kind of held their breath, this was happening. got on that stage, you guys, and sang like you could not believe. in fact, the guy from "variety" came to me after the show and said give her the tony right now. she's that kind of singer. >> and actress. she's extraordinary. >> look, there are lots of favorite moments during the night. one of my favorites had to be when liza manelli was my date. in the middle of the show, carol lee hits this crazy note, and out of nowhere, liza pops out of her seat, you guys, stands up.

she gives her own standing ovation. all i could think of is carol lee is looking at liza manelli giving her a standing ovation in the middle of the show. it wasn't at the end. >> middle of the song, happens a lot. really does. first of all, as i've said before, i don't think there's an actress on the planet who could play amy from 17 to the end of the show, and the roller coaster life that she lived. the whole cast is sensational. i just want to thank them. everybody says you must be so excited. i said, you know what i am? i'm grateful beyond belief i get to work with people like that every day. daddy used to say surround yourself with people talented than yourself and you'll look good. thanks to everybody that came and the best wishes. we didn't get the kind of reviews one would want, we got some great ones, but i thought to myself, i can't know what's going on in the hearts and minds of people that come to the show. god bless them, they are doing their job and have the right to

their opinion, but what i know for sure is what goes on in the heart of that theater eight times a week when people pay for their tickets come to the show and laugh when i wanted them to and cry where i wanted them to and are up and cheering and standing. and people are coming two and three and four times already again. >> it's unbelievable. >> something's happening there. it's very, very exciting. >> this is liza's quote. she said did you get my quote for the show? okay, what is it, here it is. she writes, "i found the evening to be inspiring and entertaining. congratulations to kathie lee and the wonderful cast on an exquisite performance. thank you, thank you, thank you." >> i want to say thank you three times to liza. she knows a little something about it. you know what i also felt as well, she came up to me afterwards. i thought what it must be for somebody like liza who's battled, her trials and tribulations in life, and her

mom, judy garland, so publicly went through so many struggles that amy also did. it's so similar to judy garland's life. i thought what it must be like for liza to watch that story taking fold. she pretty much told me that, too. she said there's just one thing missing you got to put in, just one thing. i said what is it? when amy's told she can't do this, she can't do this, she needs to say, well, it's the only thing i know how to do, which i thought was really interesting. >> she sat next to me, remind me to tell kathie that. she brought that up. >> for me, having everybody around me and the lovely, lovely good wishes was amazing, but i got to go home that night, haven't been home a lot in the last few months. this part is where i'm going to probably lose it. got to go home with my family and children who came from california, and we stayed up until like 3:00 in the morning,

and both of my children just blessed me. and i just thought, i got a 22 year old and 19 year old that actually like me and are proud of what's happened there and the beauty that we're trying to bring into the world. >> congratulations. >> and hoda, you know how i feel. you and my friends, many are here today, still supporting me, i am deeply, deeply grateful. thank you, everybody. i might be the most grateful woman on the face of the earth today. we're going to let you know tomorrow about a way you can do good in the world this holiday season, we'll let you know tomorrow. you have heard about the ongoing feud with chelsea, which was put to rest. she said she was sorry on the air, she was supposed to be on the show and cancelled it minutes before. she decided to nice thing to do is send us a case of wine. the wine's around us, it's your favorite chardonnay.

time for look at me now, the joy fit club, when we showcase one person's incredible journey to shed the extra pounds. >> a grandmother of three lost 178 pounds and turned her life around. let's take a look at pam's story. >> my name is pam holmes, and i've lost 178 pounds. when it came to food, i was not a gorger, my problem was constant grazing. at work i'd munch on chips and candy all day long, so by lunchtime i was never hungry. i thought i fooled my coworkers that i had normal eating habits, but all they had to do was look at me to know the truth. every night i'd vow to start my diet the next day, but by morning my resolve evaporated. my doctor ordered an ekg and showed me the results seem to show you've already had a heart attack. subsequent tests showed my heart was okay, but his words scared me and made me turn my life around.

i started walking, taking baby steps. let me tell you, even the smallest steps hurt, but i never gave up. i had no goal weight in mind, i just wanted to regain my health. now i am walking 5ks, and i love the feeling of getting breathless after exercise. after 30 years of being morbidly obese, i'm no longer a prisoner to my own obesity. i am proof even in your 60s, you are never too old to change your life. >> what a doll. and the leader of our joy fit pack is joy bauer. what a great story. >> here's what i love most about the story, pam is 61 years old, and she proves it is never too late. nick the bad habits, new habits, she's enjoying her grandkids in a way she was never able to enjoy her own kids because her obesity got in the way. here's the most critical step that she took, and i think a lot of viewers are going to relate to this.

she cleaned out her in-between grazing. in the past we sat down and this was what she was eating, at work, a bag of chips, six of the fun-size candy bars, vending machine oreos, then more chips with fattening dip, after dinner a bunch of crackers and a brownie sundae. the meals were okay, but at this rate, she was gaining a pound a day. now she's so clean now, apples, she snacks on grapes, she does lots of raw vegetables. >> once you start doing that, it starts to taste good to you. >> and melts off. >> here's pam's before picture. all right, pam, let's join the joy fit club. wow! >> oh, my god! >> show her up and down.

good morning. here is your forecast from the weather channel. big holiday weekend. a lot of you will probably be doing some traveling. today, much of the country, especially east of the rockies to the east coast, we're looking pretty good. if you have any plans to get out on the road or maybe you're taking to the skies, we will see a few showers along the far eastern coast of south carolina, north carolina and some wind picking up in these areas. really, nothing to be too concerned about. the big weather that will impact the travel is in the northwest, down into northern california. temperatures will be very mild here in the middle of the country. 58 in chicago, warmer for thanksgiving day, near 80 in dallas. and down into houston by wednesday, not much to talk about in the east. here comes the storm tracking a bit further to the east, impacting western wyoming and into montana.

matter? sometimes i get the pans from the grocery store, the thin ones. >> unless you buy several, because you really risk burning yourself, i would recommend getting a nice, heavy duty pan, sturdy pan. we're going to put a few chopped vegetables in there. we call that the holy trinity in southern cooking. all that does is add flavor, celery, onion, carrot. >> basics, basics. you don't stuff your bird? you do your stuffing separately? >> i did research on that. southern started calling dressing because they didn't want to stuff their birds, they'd make it like a casserole on the side. you can do both. but remember, if you stuff the bird, you have to do 30 more minutes per pound. >> only 30 seconds. >> how long do you cook the bird for? >> this is a 14-pound bird. you want to cook it at least three and a half hours to four. >> cover it or don't? >> start it out first and sear it. >> then what?
